CKUW is a campus community radio station run out of the University of Winnipeg, and prides itself on community involvement. This year, for the first time ever, CKUW is running a free radio camp for youth aged 10-13. The camp is going to be run out of the University of Winnipeg at 515 Portage Ave and will run two week-long sessions from July 23-27 and August 13-17. The first camp will be geared towards immigrant youth and new Canadians, and the second camp will be geared towards youth from the Spence neighbourhood.

Radio Camp will offer youth a chance to learn about radio and media, as well as have fun and make friends. Youth will plan, produce, and broadcast their own radio show. Participants will take part in hands-on radio training, and learn broadcast skills such as audio editing, microphone technique and mixing music. Youth will also develop a consciousness in media literacy and understand how media affects them.

Participating in radio gives youth a chance to have their voices heard and feel empowered through creating media. Youth will also get a chance to explore the University of Winnipeg, and other resources available in the downtown area. Radio Camp at CKUW also provides exposure to a local post-secondary institution, and an opportunity to interact with students acting as counselors. At the end of the week, youth will have a chance to showcase their work to their parents, and will be given a CD of their work to take home, and leave with a sense of empowerment.

The camp is free of charge, and is being funded and supported by local organizations. Snacks and lunch are provided. In addition to learning about radio, students will also participate in crafts and fun games, and will go on field trips that can range from a tour of the CBC to rock climbing.

Radio Camp offers youth a unique opportunity to get involved in community radio, and is a fun way for youth to learn about and be exposed to post-secondary institutions. We’re certainly excited about it, and we hope that you will be too!
